Crow's Feet: Sam, Our Osteopath, on Mapping the Muscle First in Brentwood

Crow's feet are the fine lines that fan out from the corners of your eyes, especially when you smile. Sam, our osteopath, spends her days working with muscles, and that is exactly how she thinks about crow's feet. In this article she explains where the lines come from, how she plans treatment and what to expect.

This video uses an AI-generated version of Sam's voice and likeness, made with her consent. The treatment footage is real, shows Sam treating, and was filmed with consent.

Sam's explanation in brief

Sam qualified as an osteopath in 2019. In the video she explains that the lines around your eyes come from the muscle that circles the eye every time you smile. Before anything else, she maps where that muscle sits on your face, then places small amounts carefully, so your smile still looks natural.

Where crow's feet come from

A ring-shaped muscle surrounds each eye. It helps you close your eyes and squint, and it is very active when you smile. Every genuine smile gathers the skin at the outer corner of the eye, and over the years those folds can become lines that stay visible at rest.

Sun exposure, squinting and natural changes in the skin with age can all make crow's feet more noticeable.

Why mapping the muscle matters

The muscle around the eye is thin, sits close to the surface and differs from person to person. Sam's training as an osteopath means she is used to assessing how muscles move and where they create tension. During your appointment she will ask you to smile and relax so she can see how your own muscle behaves.

That mapping guides where small amounts are placed. The aim is for the lines to soften while your smile still reaches your eyes.

What happens at your appointment

Every treatment starts with a consultation covering your medical history, any medications and what you would like to change. If treatment is suitable, your skin is cleansed, the muscle is mapped and the injections are given with a very fine needle. It is usually over in a few minutes, and you will be given aftercare advice before you leave.

What to expect afterwards

Small marks or slight redness at the injection points usually settle quickly. Occasionally a small bruise can appear around the eye area. Changes build gradually over the following days. Results vary, and Sam will explain what is realistic for you.

Looking after the skin around your eyes

The skin around the eyes is thinner than on much of the face, so it benefits from a little everyday care whether or not you have treatment. Wearing sunglasses in bright light reduces squinting, and daily sun protection helps protect the skin's collagen. A gentle eye cream can help with comfort and hydration. None of these replace treatment, but they support the skin in the long term, and Sam is always happy to talk them through at your consultation.
